Georeferencing

You have an old road file that is georeferenced (Fig1_georef.jpg – in .zip file). A developer builds a subdivision and gives you a shape file that is not georeferenced Fig 2_noref.jpg  - in .zip file). You can do a Spatial Adjustment in ArcMap to allow the use of the new file. Click here to download the files you need (zipped). Place the files in an appropriate folder on your zip drive then open ArcGIS and ArcCatalog. Place the shape files in your ArcMap table of contents (georefed first)

  1. Click on the Tools pull-down menu and select Customize.
  2. Check the box next to Spatial Adjustment
  3. Add the georefed and noref shape files to a new map document
Click on Full Extent (the world icon in the main tool bar)

You should now see the shape files as specs in the lower-left and upper-right corners.

  1. Begin Editing then zoom into the lower-left map (noref) and select the New Displacement Link tool (If you have trouble seeing the data, right-click on the noref file name in the table of contents to get the context menu and choose Select All  -- under Selection. Then go to the Selection pull-down menu (main pull-down menu – top of user interface) and use Zoom to Selected Features)
  2. Activate snapping (editor pull-down menu) and click on a corner of the grid with the displacement link tool.
  3. Enter Full Extent (world on main tool bar)
  4. Zoom to upper-right of the map view to the georefed map and click the New Displacement Link tool on the correlative corner
  5. Repeat until at least four links are made and then save the links.
  6. Now go the Spatial Adjustment pull-down menu, select set adjust data, and make sure only noref is selected.
  7. Go to Spatial Adjustment and click on Adjust.

The files should now overlay.

Export as-is to a .jpg and e-mail it to me at gnash@egi.utah.edu
